Science Fair

Science Fair is fun!
Well - it should be anyway.
You will all complete an observational drawing in class.
You may do the photography as anoptional extra - this could be in place of the wallchart.
You must do a wallk chart explaining how a "home appliance" works, unless you do photography or one of the other more tricky categories.
If you want to avoid the wallchart category in favour of an investigation or technological innovation, you MUST follow the instructions and seek advice from me. I strongly recommend that you think carefully before attempting this option with the time that is remaining to you. A detailed, dated log book is essential.
We have discussed it all at length. You have written instructions.
You must bring your completed work to school on the first Monday to show me BEFORE you glue anything onto your A2 coloured presentation paper.
It is COMPULSORY.

Hi everyone! Is anyone going to have a go at a microwave? Remember we talked about the way microwaves work is simular to the way the heat from the sun gets transfered to the earth through the vaccum of space. Some of the discussions we had about heat and what it does to matter would be of assistance for this applicance examination also. Good luck everyone, drop me a line if ya need any help.

rosiegal said...

NO I am not doing a microwave, though Im sure someone might!!
I am not completely sure what I am doing, but I am pretty sure now!!!
So now we can do photography! When is the actual ful;l finished science fair project due in??

MrWoody said...

thanks Mr A-man :-)

Rosiegal - its questions like that that make teachers tear their hair out. Please re-read the post.

rosiegal said...

Sorry, Mr woody, didnt see that part!! (OOPS! TE HE HE!!)

Thanks wOoD mOnStA for making a science fair post!!
I DO know what I am doing for science fair - I've started already!! I'm not going to say what I'm doing, though! (It's not amazing so don't expect lots!!)

I think I might do photography as well - well, maybe I will.

Sorry Mr A-man, I'm not doing the microwave either!!
I like that idea you had, though, Mr Woody, about the light bulbs, but I didn't want to be like everyone else, so I came up with my own idea!!

mudpies02 said...

Also, is it just our class in year 7 who it's compulsory for, or is it compulsory for everyone???

Kitty Kat said...

hello!

Is kitty kat a student from last year?? I have my science project now!!! It;s not completely finished, but it amost is.
I was going to do photography, but Im doing a wall chart now. Could I maybe do both (Etc: would I be aloud?)

Miss Piggy said...

So is that all the rules there? Sorry, I'm totally lost! I do remember discussing it in class and in the library and everything, but I don't remember anything about written instructions! Sorry!

Roo said...

Sorry Mr A-Man.
I'm not doing the microwave.
I am doing the electric toothbrush though.
Also I am doing the photography and of course the observational drawing.
Mudpies02 I think it is compulsory for everyone.

IMPORTANT QUESTION!!!!!
For the wall chart's can the three diagrams be in colour? Because My sista said when she did a scientific wall chart, she did them in colour, and you said they had to be in black and white (Well just pencil). Does this still apply?
Also, can I do photography as well? Cause I started doing it, and then decided to do a wall chart, so I am just wondering!!??!!??
Miss piggy- we got a sheet full of instructions, and we all glued them in our science book, remember now? I dint glue it in so I could take it home, and now I have it at my house so I canknow whhat I have to do!

Also...
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO SNOWY!!!!!
She is turning 12 today, so all please say...
Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday dear Snowy
Happy birthday to you!!!!!
HIp HIP HOORAY!!!

mudpies02 said...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SNOWY!!!! Nice being 12???

Thanks for answering my question roo!

That seems odd not to be able to have them in colour!!
Also, I was wondering, on our wallchart, are we allowed* to have photos as well as drawings, as long as we take them ourselves???

*Allowed, kitty kat and rosiegal!! Aloud is, 'She read the book aloud.' Allowed is, 'Am I allowed to go????'

I think I must of been away the day that we glued those in because on the second to last day of term I checked my science book and it didn't have that many things in it!

Happy birfday snowy!
Anyways, people, I am all set to go. But, I have dilema - I know everything, what to do, you know...
It's just, well, I am unsure of... nothing.
I have a funny...
AH! My Dad says on our wall charts we have to have a hypothosis, a method, equipment, the works (done biotech yet???). Sew, I told him that that is a scientific investigation, but the poor thing won't listen. So, Mr WOODY, trust Paper or a living person (by the way, can you stick the instructions on the blog? It is in my science book and it was when i wasbiking home I thought of it. Ekks.)?

mudpies02 said...

Thought of what???

Mr Woody, the Clustrmap's red all over!!

mojo said...

I'm doing a microwave I've got a lot of information about them. Is anyone else doing them or is it just me?

Hi everyone!!! I'm back from camp=]
I know what I'm doing, but I won't say it. Rosiegal, can you please like put a post on your blog saying what specific things we have to do and how we have to do it? Because I didn't bring my science book home!
dreamhuntress, yes we HAVE to do a wall chart, Mr Woody said that in class=]!
Ok,
Thanks
Bye
:-)

mojo said...

do we need a border?

mudpies02 said...

Hmmm, I don't think so - but don't quote me on that!! :o)

mudpies02 said...

Nope, if you were meaning about wall charts, I just checked my science book, and it says nothing about a border. However, make sure your wall chart is flat, it's on A2 paper, diagrams are clear and well labelled, and you have at least 3 diagrams.

MrWoody said...

neinamarie - your dad is wrong about needing a hypothesis for your wallchart - that is only if you are doing an investigation as you said.

yes, the instructions are in your science book as rosiegal says.

yes rosiegal - colour may be used in your diagrams but keep it as a technical looking line drawing with labels etc.

yes, yo can do as many categories as you like so long as you do the minimum at least.

have fun - my computer died so i'm less bloggy than normal.

Queenie said...

Mr Woody how much writing do we have to do?
As well as diagrams do we put other pictures on as well?

Queenie said...

Another question does the A2 paper have to be white?
What I meant to say before was can we put a picture printed from the computer on as well as the diagrams.

Um Neina, Mr Woody said that we can just do photography for science fair see......

"You may do the photography as anoptional extra - this could be in place of the wallchart.

Yippie, look on my blog because I have my blogger thing science fair on it. I need some help with it - I do not know if it is a long light tube, or an energysaving lightbulb! Help!

HamilTRON said...

Here's a good idea.
If you are doing a Wall Chart do something like a eco-bulb.
Things that are next-generation.
If you can find info, do something that has just been developed.

Marshall said...

Hmmmm... a wall chart sounds like a good and easy idea. oh yeah, an LCD screen TV would be a good choice, if you know what's going on inside. Another good option for a wall chart would be the household vacuum cleaner... I always wonder, "is there really vacuum inside a vacuum cleaner?"
one good thing about a wall chart is that you get to investigate something while you present it.

Roo said...

Um, Um, Um.
Mr. Woody told me that I had to do the wallchart as well as the photography and obsevational drawing.

Yeah, are we allowed to put pictures from the computer on our chart too?

Oh and I'm not doing the toothbrush anymore. I'm doing the cyclonic vacuum cleaner.

Snowy said...

Well, im just doing photography?????????

Aquagirl said...

Hi everyone hope you are enjoying your holiday. Mr Woody you know how I'm doing the Expresso machine and that my three digrams are the three different expresso machines what am I supposed to write about them?

What instructions?
I know it is really late to start talking about this but my computer has been stuffed up for ages.
Don't worry DH I'm am dead too.
I barely understand any of this.
It must be me.
I don't have A2 paper and I don't know where to buy it.
I am completely useless.
I ask all of you a question.
Why do people spend more than half their lives doing things they don't want to?
B.T.W. I only want family at my funeral.
I haven't got anything.

Lyinda said...

(I think you can buy the A2 paper from Warehouse Stationary, but it's closed on Sundays I think)
I'v got all my information for my wall chart, It's just that it's my draft. And I don't think I will finish it on time because I don't have a printer at home. But i'v got a note, so I think im saved.

For Kitty Milo

Scientific Wall Chart
Topic: How does it work - A household appliance.

There are many such applicances but they could include toaster, jugs, vacuum cleaner, rice cooker, electric drill, skilsaw, can opener etc.
Give a Scientific description/explanation of the processes involved in the working of this thing/object. Be Concise.
Include at least 3 diagrams which help your explanation of the scientific processes involved. Draw these yourself.
The wall charts need to be flat - no 3-D models or extras that can fall off.
List references used. Put these in a small box at the bottom right hand corner. Chart size: A2 paper (no larger).
Diagrams should be clear and well labelled. Text should be concise, easy to read, and be able to be understood by a non-science person.
Judges will look for innovation and originality, clear communication, and good scientific content.
The chart should be done on cartridge (or similar weight paper).
Put name, year level, home phone number, school name on the back.

DreamHuntress, are we still working together?
This is what I hate:
I am away for a few days and have planned to work with certain people and then when I get back, everyone has made a new group and I am left with nothing.
I hope DreamHuntress hasn't done this.
HHHHHHMMMMMMMPPPPPPHHHHHHH!!

rosiegal said...

ARe you guys (DReam huntress and kerli) doing a scientific investigation? Is any one doing that or an invention? I think captain jack might be!!?? Most people in our class are doing wall chart, but some people arent i think. I am doing a wall chart and photography, Although i so far only have two photos I can use!
Has everyone had a good holiday? I have, but I know I will definitely miss my slep ins! a.k.a, I dont miss waki ng up at 6:30am!!!
Just checking, are we still bringing in un-glued science fairs tomorrow?
I just went to the dog show at claudelands event centre. Some dogs wre dancing, it was so cute!! And there was an amazing artist drawing pictures of dogs,it looked so life like! Did any one else go?
(Sorry, I know Im waffling!)
One final question, are we still doing the observational drawing??
Teleho, To the batmobile, and TTFN

You can also buy A2 paper at whittcoulles(is that spelt right?)

I am doing alright with my wallchart just a couple of things im not sure about like are we allowed to have pics of the internet on our wallchart?

Nei-Nei Neina-Marie said...

Oh damn. I did all my carefully planned science fair work in Auckland - I am just about to leave for Hamilton at the airport and I realized I haver left them at home! I'll get them sent over, though, no fear :)

MrWoody said...

yes, bring in internet pics with references and we will decide together if its okay.
yes, we will all be doing an observational drawing in class this week.
yes, everyone must bring their completed science fair work in to class tomorrow, not stuck on paper, so we can review it to see if its correct before glueing it on.

Lyinda said...

I don't really know if this is true but I think the winner gets $600.

mudpies02 said...

Wow! I think the winner gets $60 not $600!! (Wishful thinking dream huntress!)
I have now finished my science fair project! YAY!!!!!!!!!!
:o)

At first I thought that science fair would be boring, but now that I've actually gotten around to doing it, it was actually quite fun!
