Maths Legends


Who was the coolest mathematician ever?

Could it have been Pythagoras, Archimedes, or Eratosthenes?

What were their claims to fame? How have they influenced our world through their discoveries or theories? Do they have a particular thing they are renowned for?

Archimedes was a prodigy similar to Mozart, that is why I chose him


Archimedes invented a way to measure the volume of an irregular shaped thing. Archimedes solved lots of puzzles like once, Archimedes was asked to determine whether it was of solid gold, or whether silver had been added by a dishonest goldsmith. Archimedes had to solve the problem without damaging the crown, so he could not melt it down into a regularly shaped body in order to calculate its density. While taking a bath, he noticed that the level of the water in the tub rose as he got in, and realized that this effect could be used to determine the volume of the crown. For practical purposes water is incompressible, so the submerged crown would displace an amount of water equal to its own volume. By dividing the weight of the crown by the volume of water displaced, the density of the crown could be obtained. The density of the crown would be lower than that of gold if cheaper and less dense metals had been added. Archimedes then took to the streets naked, so excited by his discovery that he had forgotten to dress, crying "Eureka!"

Archimedes also invented the Archimedes screw and the claws of Archimedes, he also came up with the idea of hydrostatics.

My favourite too is Archimedes, because of the Eureka thing, but also because of the way he died.
He had made some sort of machenery up, I think it was the hydro claw and screws that Mech boy stated previously, to keep those nasty romans/greeks (I can't remember) out, but when the R/G DID break through, they ended up getting through the whole place and tormenting everyone. They found Archimedes and said "Give it up dood, come with us," but Archimedes was too slow so they killed 'im.

My favourite was also Archimedes because he created many useful machines and creative ways to measure things.

Archimedes because he invented the sphere inscribed within the cylider thing. But sadly he was killed by a Roman soldier while drawing the picture, althought he was very good at maths he was also a very good inventer and invented lots of very useful machines like mojo had said.

I think the best ever mathmatician is Fibonacci because he came with a pattern that appears many times in nature
The pattern is: 1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34,55,89,144,233,377,610,etc
How the pattern works is that you add the 2 numbers before it starting from 1 eg 1+0=1, 1+1=2 and so on and so on.
and also if you divide a number in the pattern (that is a 3+ digit number)and divide it by the number before it then round it and you get 1.6180.
Cool isn't it.

I choose leonardo davinci he was a fantastic mathmatician he was the first person to be able to draw scale models of buildings and he tried to draw scales of helicopters.

I_luv_animals_AKA_ashymashy's good at math and is pretty cool! What about the coolest kid at school (red headed room5ian with the Hummer hook-ups), is he a bit of a mathematician?

What about Stephen William Hawking, he's pretty famous for his work on cosmology, quantum gravity, relativity etc, particularly theories on black holes. He predicted that black holes would emit radiation and was proved correct! They named it Hawking radiation is his honor.

Yes I agree, ashymashy is great at maths!!! Log-on's good at maths too!!

Errrrrm, well, all I knew about Archimedes was that he sat in a bathtub! I've learnt lots!!!

I think Albert Einstein. Even though he was a physicist his theory's would have taken an extremely math wise brain.

I think Isaac Newton was a great mathematician and physicist.
He invented Calculus (branch of mathematics concerned with rates of change, gradients of curves, maximum and minimum values of functions, and the calculation of lengths, areas, and volumes).

You may have heard of the story when Newton was sitting under a tree and see an apple fall to the ground in his orchard. It was when Newton thought about that the same force influenced the motion of the moon and the apple.

Newton published his work in an extremely complex book called the 'PhilosophiƦ Naturalis Principia Mathematica' (translated from latin:mathematical principles of natural philosophy).
Note: The 'PhilosophiƦ Naturalis Principia Mathematica' can be called the 'Principia' for short.

Newton's partner Robert Hooke disagreed on his work, so sneaky Newton waited until Hooke passed away, then published his work.
