Brain Power!

Today you watched a D.A.R.E. video about the dangers of drug use and how it affects your brain.
Your whole world deepends on your brain function so you better look after it - especially when you're young and your brain is developing. Choices you make now will potentially affect you for the rest of your life.

Another interesting thing that has happened in Room 5 in the last week has been the challenge laid down about memorising Pi. Remember Mr Jones said you couldn't remember more than 7 digits in a sequence? Well, several of you [including "Awesomo4000" and "Fred"] have memorised it and recited it to me accurately in excess of 50 and even a 100 digits - WOW!!!

Tell me how many you can remember and try to explain clearly how you do it. I am very interested in how you use your clever brains.
Also, does anyone know what Pi is useful for?

In relation to your learning, memory and intelligence, check out the word study list for this week - it has terms on it like "Synaptic Plasticity". Any idea what that might be? Some researchers tell us that brain synapses are where intelligence lives...

What is photographic memory? Do you have one? What is the other name for it?

Isn't Pi used sometimes for math equations so you can solve them and also to full our tummys mmm...

*Well done to those two "fullaroonies" the most I could remember was 16 ,oops I didn't have much time but at least I tried =)
*well I don't know much about the brain but definently ask hamiltron
*PI is a sequence of numbers that is used to work out the area ,i think of a circle and there finding more digits every day theres like over 1 million numbers so imagine if you could remember all of those!!!
*last of all i do not have a photographic memory im just simply plain!!!
(except for being in the "G.A.T.E"class)

Hi. I can only remember like 20 or something. everyone should be able to memorize 26. 26 because you can memorize 26 letters. an easy way is to make a song out of the numbers.

HamilTRON said...

Hey guys, sorry I haven't been on for quite a while!
I cannot comment on the brain thing but I'm trying not to write a novel!
I liked the DARE Session today I got to see my past favorite cartoon characters!!!
I don't know why people use pi?
And here's a question.
Why does pi consist of over 1 million digits?

I kinda sorta have a photographic memory, I can sometimes remember stuff really visibly, and I can hear exactly what songs sound like relayed in my head. But I dont think I am!
On my blog I have two fun widgets! THey are really easy to download, please go and look!

Hi peoples.
I probably won't come to talent quest tonight because I have a REALLY bad throat.
My sister is leaving to China for 17 days tomorrow and it's were that big earthquake happened.
Sorry off topic.
All of those people who got over 10 should be really proud.
I know it sounds only a little but at least they took some time to try.
I can't remember more then 13.
Sad, I know.
Photographic memory is where you see something like a number plate and you can remember all the numbers and letters in order.

Eidetic memory, or total recall are the other names for it.
It is where you remember images, sounds and objects in memory with very accurately and in volume. Eidetic means:
"Extraordinarily detailed and vivid recall of visual images".

Thanks

Hey, with what Hamiltron said, about pi being long, some Japanese scientist made himself internationally acclaimed by finding pi to like, somethingtrillion places. But, I think a third of a hunderd may be longer than pi! I mean, 33.33333 continued! So, that is 99.99999 continued! It is so annoying how maths does this to us. If your base number was eiight (one two three four five six seven ten), would be have such problems Mr Woody?
Here is a website on pi!
http://mathforum.org/dr.math/faq/faq.pi.html

**KERLI** said...

WOAH!
Why did people make pi so long? What is the point?
We don't even use the full equation.
Maths is complicated.

Miss Candy said...

Just of topic but do you guys use the wiki? by the way if you multiply Pi by the diameter of the a circle it gives you the cicle curcumfirence, yes maths is very cunfusling!

p.s I was in mr.woody's class last year.

i remember by remembering small numbers or patterns or sequences

mudpies02 said...

Clever....
I think a photographic memory is when you remember things in pictures or like playing a DVD (Your memory) in your head?

mudpies02 said...

Oh, and Pi can be used for measuring the volume of shapes and stuff! (As Mr A Man taught us - *sob*, nah just joking, but it is sad that he's going. I wonder if he'll keep coming to the blog???)

Miss Piggy said...

I know this is totally off-topic, but I'm just letting you know that I've changed my name from sherbet, to Miss Piggy.

Olly said...

I can only memorise about 21

Miss Piggy said...

I can remember 28 digits of PI, but I don't know if I have a photographic memory, probably not, (especially with notices and P.E gear)but I always remember everyones number plates for some weird reason.

Miss Piggy said...

Oh, and try this, it's totally off topic-but fun!!!
(I guess it has some things in it that you have to memorize...)
P.S. Don't cheat by using a bit of paper and writing them down!!!

rosiegal said...

YAY!!! U are on the blog again! Im hte same as Kitty milo, I can memorise the spam tester (When posting a comment) straight away.
I love memorizing things in tunes, and patterns that stick in my head while typing the numbers in the little box. I also pronounce the saounding of it. Say, if it is:
ieyqgl, I will repeat in my head, ieyyqugli!!!
Random huh!!!

Roo said...

Ummmmm,
This is off topic but, can you guys tell me some good font types for my science fair.

HamilTRON said...

Hey Guys!
Having a great holiday, Science Fair coming along great!
Roo it really depends on what you are doing for the Sci Fair.
Done some research and found lots of things about hydroponics.
When I went to the library to get some books to help me I found 2 books.
One of them is the same book as Snowy showed us in the library.
"How Cool Suff Works"
I've found the same book its just got a different cover.
It's called "The Gadget Book" By Chris Woodford and Jon Woodcock
Dewey Decimal
Junior Non-Fiction
608
WOO

It's really good!!!
Have a great holiday and see you next term.

HamilTRON

Roo said...

My science fair is the photography one. The theme is heat.

gnome said...

Mr.Woody just wondering could you do a post on the science fair. Thanks :)

rosiegal said...

Yes please, maybe a q's and a's one on science fair!!!

Lyinda said...

Do you have to finish your draft for the science fair by the end of the holidays or do you have to finish the good copy by the end of the holidays as well.

HamilTRON said...

Sorry I not saying that I was not listning but can someone tell me the instructions for Wall CHarts I know a few of heart!

HamilTRON

Nei-Nei Neina-Marie said...

Mr woody, can you please put up a post on our scienvce wall chart? I need it for it.

mudpies02 said...

Yeah, I came here specially just to check if there were any science fair posts!!

mudpies02 said...

Anyway, with the word verification thing at the bottom, if the word was 'dukcwak' I'd remember it as 'duck quack' (like rosiegal said). So I make it into words that I can remember more easily.

Rhys Abrahams said...

Hey mudpies02, yep I'll visit the blog from time to time. I would have remembered that word verification thingy as "duck wack!", kind of like "hulk smash!!!"

Do any of you get that? Anyone read comics?

What about switching it to "wack duck!!!"

Kitty Kat said...

pi is used to find the circumference of a circle pi x radius squared so yeah

Roo said...

Haha,
funny Mr A-man.

mudpies02 said...

No, I don't read comics but there's that ad on TV for the Hulk hands that make noises when you press them. One says 'Smash and crash' or something like that....

P.S.
The word verification at the bottom at the moment is: heifmy.
When I saw that I automatically thought 'Heefmee'....

The brain is an extremely complicated bit of your body. And so precious-even though it is mostly water. Now for some weird facts... didi you know that if your brain was split in the middle, your body would act differently. One time two scientists decided to split a man's brain to see what the man would do. After splitting, one of the man's arm was trying to hit his wife, while the other one was trying to stop him!
P.S it's GOOD to be back to the blogging world.
