Small World

Appreciate what you have... watch this video to see why. It's about imagining the population of the planet as being only 100 people and showing the proportions of ethnicity, wealth, etc. as they are today.

You will need flash and broadband... [approximately only 3% of the world's population can achieve that]

Well I have an argument.

It's taken as a whole ratio that has been scaled down, you cannot single out certain countries to keep the same ratio.

Off that argument,
I'll start with the good part.
This is a good movie.
now for the not so good part,
I find this unsatifactory as the age is not stated and, of course this comes into acount e.g.
Children don't really have a choice if they don't have internet.

i agree with you, Gaboose.
Well done for thinking critically and evaluating the suspicious data.
This EXACTLY the kind of critical thinking i hope to see from you students....!!!!

On this "fact" it would be saying approximately 15,861,617 people in North America would have access to internet. Out of an estimated 337,167,248. But in North America alone there are 387,251,178 Internet as of June 30/08. So this is 73.6% of North America's population, as North America has approximately 528,720,588 people. Not 3% as it was said to be around the world in 2001.

In Africa there is an estimated 967million people, of which 5.3% have Usage of the internet. This is 51,065,630 people.

But as I said the movie was made in 2001. In 2008 21.9% percent of the world had interne connection. 3%-21% is a big difference but the usage growth from the year 2000-2008 has been 305.5%.

Remember this is all approximate.

Opps the information has been updated according to them but it seems to me like the last time they have updated it was 2000 according to the numbers.

Dreamy has all the points in my head. Anyway, I thought the movie was great, and I never really thought of it that way.

Don't feel as though you have to approve this...
Yes, I was logged into a google account. Ideally folks would want to leave a comment that would redirect readers back to their blog. So the way you have it set-up right now, only folks who have blogs on blogger would get hits when someone clicks on their name. Also, before I had the google account I ignored anyone's comments who had it set-up for google accounts only. Most people wouldn't go through the extra step of setting up an account to leave a comment.
I actually think I have logged out of my classroom account and I am now in a personal one. I left the comment before from Moran Middle School.

Did you know, the average life span of a human is 80 so if you take this average and divide it by 4,600,000,000.00 (the atmospheres' approximate age) then times that number by 100 you get the percentage of an average life span in comparence to the atmospheres' age. It equals:
1.7391304347826086956521739130435e-6

If you can explain this please tell me.

I get it.
You know how there are cat-years and dog-years, which are compared to human years? For instance, a 18 year old cat would be a 100 year old human.
Well, an 80 year old Human is a 1 year old Atmosphere.
At least, that waht I think you mean.

That movie was really striking. It made it easier to watch since the world only had '100 people'. I found it really interesting.
