science is for everyone - even our rats can do it

Do you think you don't have what it takes to become a scientist? well you're wrong!

Life lessons in science

What is the one thing everyone should learn about science? Spiked asked 250 scientists - here we bring you some of the most provocative responses

Seth Lloyd Professor of mechanical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology

You do not have to be a scientist to do science; you can be a child, a computer, or an intelligent rat. As long as you can verify a result, it is part of science.

Antony Hoare Senior researcher at Microsoft Corporation

I would teach the world that scientists start by trying very hard to disprove what they hope is true. When they fail, they have a good reason for believing what they hope is true, and can even convince others of its truth. A scientist always acknowledges the possibility of error, and is less likely to be mistaken than one who always claims to be right.

and specially for Marshall...

Peggy Lemaux Cooperative extension specialist in plant biotechnology at the University of California at Berkeley

I would nominate the basic formula for photosynthesis: CO2 + H2O + sunlight/chlorophyll —> O2 + C6H12O6. Why is this so important? Because without this chemistry, life on earth would not be possible.

I think that all of those sayings are good. But I think that we should learn Chemistry and Physics.
They are the basic scentific stuff that we should know.
The subject of Chemistry has a lot to learn.
For eg: The Periodic Table, Formulae,
pH, Alkaline, Alkalis and many more cover the subject of Chemistry.
Physics is the science of movement, force, charge, space and time.
These are both interesting subjects.
We can do experiments of these subjects.
Like use litmus paper to decide the pH of a chemical.
We can push cars and see which one goes the farthest on different types of material.
eg: Vinyl, Carpet, Mat, Lino.
We can learn the Periodic table of by heart. (Not such a good idea, it will probably be a bit boring!)
We can learn about the strongest chemical.
Sodium FLouride. (Correct me if i'm wrong)
Some scientists have nearly died or have suffereed the severity of this chemical.
It can even eat through glass!
The science world is a world full of things to be explored.
I'll justify that in class when we are looking at the blog!

its fuuny how peggy lemaux's reply was so different to the others.
i agree with seth loyd the most. all 3 scientists have a good point of view and i htink they're all true but i think seth loyd's is the most true.! i checked out the science games and i did the quizzes and they are realllllly cool! i think they helped my learning. it tells you if what you said was correct and then explains it to you. the activity's are cool beause you have to use some of your own knowledge to work the problems out. !!!
ok cya

I found Antony Hoare's comment interesting. A scientist is more likely to be right than someone who always claims to be right...

it is funny that what Anthony Hiare said; 'start by trying very hard to disprove what they hope is true.' I a gree wiht this, but it does seem strange to prove something wrong that you think is right, but it is actually quite sensible. If you cant not prove something it has more of a chance to be right than proving some thing, as there could be lots of things that could stuff up your theory. It is really confusing, but I think it is quite true. Peggy's coment was a lot more different than the others and it used a lot more confusing vocab, like 'CO2 + H2O + sunlight/chlorophyll > O2 + C6H12O6.' I havent really learnt anything like this, so it is rather hard to understand!

I hope you are back 2moro!

By the way, mr Woody, I now have my hamiltON photos on my blog if you need to check them out!

Yes, I agree with mudpies02, because to say your right about everything is alright but it's even harder to say you got it wrong. It shows real confidence to face up and say you got something wrong. Weather people for example, they may get the weather wrong but at least they admit it. Imagine if the weather person just carried on like they never got anything wrong.

What Peggy Lemaux said about that if we didn't have chemistry and science life on Earth would not be possible.

-Life is here to be lived and life is to be lived as one would live their life-

Um... ah... yeah... hehehe.... uh...
WHY do others have to say stuff when I have many ingeneous thoughts swirling through my head.

Even though I have already done my "cool guy with the weird hair who helped this world" project, the guy who formulated pi and said stuff about maths. His name... I can't remember...

This is a cool as site - hope you guys watch the video that it is!!
It is about pi - i have shown you before, I juste felt it would be appropriate! :)

MrWoody said...

neina marie - the fact that you can't remember his name and are attributing Pi to him, [which is not mentioned in your assignment and which has been around since before the ancient Greeks] makes me suspect you haven't really learnt anything from your assignment...

Hey fallas,
I've put my info and presentation on my blog!
If it gets shown I will speak about it.
And > O2 + C6H12O6 is that some sort of formula like 2 oxygen atoms, 6 carbon atoms, 12 hydrogen atoms, and 6 oxygen atoms.
I'll check with Marshall 2moro.
That's if he gets better.
Hope you're back Mr Woody!!

Maybe everyone could put there influetal person project on there blog instead of presenting it! After all, quite a few people already have!

I know this is completely random but I always think of the rats and poor Fluffball when I see this post.

Nei-Nei Neina-Marie said...

NO! Mr Woody, what I meant was, another guy, he did something about pi and maths! ARGH! I obviously don't do things very well!

MrWoody said...

i agree, cheetalicious.

i see what yo umean now, neina-marie - be careful how you structure your sentences in future to avoid confusion :-)

by the way how do you get a picture beside your blog posts and or on your blog i dont know sense im a newbee on this stuff

mudpies02 said...

Maybe everyone could present their project on their blog, but also do it on a poster or something if they want to. I'm going to put one on the blog, because if all the info is on the computer at any rate, you may as well put it on the blog... :oP
