Student Youth Council

Dileepa from the University of Waikato and Anaru from Hamilton Boys High School visited us on behalf of the Hamilton Student Youth Council today. They came to discuss the proposed developments in several of Hamilton's strategic growth areas. Our feedback was sought and we had a chance to have a voice in the city, once again.

Anti-graffiti visit

We recently decided that graffiti was a problem in our city as part of our HamiltON inquiry project. Constable Berquist and Mr Molloy from the HCC gave us a talk about what our city is doing to fight the problem of graffiti.

They invited us to participate in a poster competition with prizes supplied by the HCC. A very interesting thing happened to a couple of our classmates this week. As they went to the ICT suite to print out a colour copy of their posters, another teacher stopped them saying "Your poster should say anti-tagging, not anti-graffiti, because it's tagging that is bad, not graffiti." Was she right? What do you think?

Term Two projects + "managing self"

Hi kidlets - here is the explanation of when work is due and what we will be doing in Term Two:

1. Kakepuku Catastrophe! - draft should be written already. Finished version due Friday week two. Class time will be given every day. No extensions

2. HamiltON inquiry Project - this is mainly (a) the digital story relating your personal story or your promotion of HamiltON. It will be completed as a powerpoint-style [powerpoint, Marvin, or imovie] presentation with your own digital images, narration, text and some use of animated Marvin characters. You will do it in class time.

There is going to be a major competition run my Microsoft Partners inLearning to select a winner for this competition between Rm5 and Rm9 - a VERY EXCITING prize will be up for grabs... [think of a letter from the alphabet and think of a small cubic container]
- the entire HamiltON inquiry project must be completed by WEEK FIVE

(b) Anti-GRaffiti Poster COmpetition - run by HCC and Hamitlon POlice, we have one week to design and create a winning poster, [colour, A4] - prizes include book vouchers.

(c) Extras - design of City Heart features such as Garden Place, Wintec Wall, Claudelands Bridge Clip on walkway, etc. - this part of the project can best be presented as a Google Sketchup type presentation with text. Other ideas welcomed.

3. SciEnce fAIR - compulsory - TIME WILL BE SPENT IN CLASS LEARNINg SCiENTIFIC METHODS, etc, BUT THE SCIeNCE FAIR iTSeLF will be a HOMEWORK PROJECT due week one, Term Three.

P.E. - Football, Netball, Hockey, fitness

Languages - Te Reo, English - grammar, word study, transactional writing

MAths - number stuff using Numeracy project methods [like playing with blocks! COol!!! I love blocks]

Possible project for Term Two - opinions, debates and arguments

TERM TWO is going to be DYNAMIC - your management of time and work habits is going to make or break you. It is a 9 week term. Lots of very important work needs to be done. Reports are being written this term. Candidates for top academic, most diligent, and excellence in science, language and the other curriculum areas will be scrutinised this term....

Kia kAha tamariki ma - you have the skills, intelligence, creativity and time to produce some amazing work this term. You now need to apply the personal work and organisation skills to achieve excellence!

READ THIS CAREFULLY before you ask questions that have already been answered.

HCC Dog Control

The nice people at the pound [next to SPCA] need warm bedding for all their poor dogs. It will be very cold there through winter, so see if you can find old blankets, polar fleece, woolen jumpers, dog coats, etc, to help the poor crittters out.

Fieldtrip Fantasmagora!

WOW! What a great field trip. We did so much. You Room5ians were excellent!!! The best group I've ever taken on a field trip in 8 yrs.

There is usually a battle of words between such rivals as Kiwi Greg Murphy and some of the Aussie drivers befroe a big race. This is no different. It adds to the fun.

a whopping great success!

Well, our expo day at the Meteor with the Hamilton City Council went really well. The Room5ians who took part were top shelf ambassadors for Peachgrove and HamiltON. Our agents were in the field doing mobile blogging to send evidence of our cool city in live as they found it. The head agent coordinator [Rosiegal] put in the hard yards to take our message to the people of HamiltON and to explain to the City Council folk how we innovatively use technology to make learning active, interactive, adventurous, intriguing, fun, and purposeful.
Sadly we thought we weren't able to include everyone, but as it turned out, we could have ! oh well, next time we'll know better.
The good news is that as a result of our time spent there from 9:30 until 3:30 we met the CEO of the HCC, Michael Redman, we might be visited by our Mayor, we might get in the newspaper, we are having a poster competition with prizes, we will be visited by people from the police and council to hear our views on the city, we will try to get the Team Kiwi Racing people in to visit us, we are going to win prizes, the director of the City Museum wants to hear from us, the PiL researchers have filmed us interviewing the head of communications for the council. Phew - that was a long sentence. Sarah, the communication director from HCC wants us to teach her how to mobile blog and use communications technology and in return she will cover the VIP tent at the V8s for us with her mobile phone and post directly to our blog.
Essentially, by getting involved, we created loads of new opportunities for ourselves to bring our studies alive - learning outside the classroom and with ICT rocks!
Viva the Room5ians!
SO, next we will have visitors in the classroom. We also need to get out more with everyone involved. I say we go on a walking tour to meet the museum director and experience the Waikato museum ...a picnic might be nice too.
We should also arrange to go to Kakepuku to read our finished stories that we have written about going there...Let's go Wednesday in the last week of term...confirmation pending feedback.
