learning by "doing" in a real context

I wonder if the Room5ians are starting to learn in a way that is embedded with the NZ Curriculum Key Competencies. . . ?

What are they? Well, read on and tell me how you have used them in your gardening project so far or how you think you could use them in the future.

Capabilities for living and lifelong learning

The New Zealand Curriculum identifies five key competencies:

  • thinking
  • using language, symbols, and texts
  • managing self
  • relating to others
  • participating and contributing.
"More complex than skills, the competencies draw also on knowledge, attitudes, and values in ways that lead to action...As they develop the competencies, successful learners are also motivated to use them, recognising when and how to do so and why...The competencies continue to develop over time, shaped by interactions with people, places, ideas and things. Students need to be challenged and supported to develop them in contexts that are increasingly wide-ranging and complex."

WELL. prepeare... ths is how we learnt with gardening today:

THINKING- we all thought about what we could be doing, how we could be contributing and helping and working as a team. we made a good system and we were all thinking about where we should be and who we should be helping. We thought what job we should do next and what was the best way to do it and work it out. we did the jobs in order of importance and we also got some prices. I found a good quality basketball! we also helped others. we trimmed the rosemary bush and gave those clippings to bio tech. we were THINKING about how we could use this block to benefit for us and others.

USING LANGUAGE, SYMBOLS AND TEXT-
we used language to communicate with eachother so we could help eachother with the task at hand. we also communicated by having our won jobs so when someone needed us they could call out "spade boy" or "worm boy" so not everyone was fighting and arguing over who got to do what job.

MANAGING SELF-
we managed ourselves because we got to work and we all discovered something and sorted ourselves out when we needed help. we ll washed our own hands and didn't boss anyone around. we managed ourselves by being independent and doing the job without a teacher supervising. we picked up our own mess we made, cleaned up things we spilled and too responsibility for our etremely dirty shoes or feet.

RELATING TO OTHERS-
we related to other by using eactothers strengths so we could balance on eachother and support eachother as a team!!! we are all good at different things so we did the thing we were good at and we talked and got along with everyone. we had systems so some people were doing one thing, someone else doing another and we were able to sustain our work pace while supporting, talking and helping someone away from you.

PARTICIPATING AND CONTRIBUTING-
in the end, we all participated in all the jobs i.e- refining soil, digging out roots, raking ground/ leveling the ground, sorting the pots, making soil by using the soil from the dead plants, collecting buckets and apparatus, trimming down trees and picking up rubbish, throwing weeds into compost and getting the worms into the wormery!!!
we all worked extremely well as a team and all contributed and supported eachother and it was altogether a fantastic day!!!
if you read this thanks for reading! if you didn't then thanks for looking. fortunate for me, I would have been in hospital if it weren't for mr woody teaching us that life inportant lesson "never eat glass"! i would have chomped my teeth into that piece of glass if mr woody hadn't told me and i'm sure a whole lot of other people not to!! phew, lucky me!!!
Ok
Thanks
Bye
:-)

You have already put this sort of thing on the blog Mr WOody - it does get depressing after a bit!
There is a thing in the Greenhosue we could use for the bottom of the chicken coup - then we could build on to of it and... we have a beauitful chicken farm with gorgeous chickies!
Mrs C in biotech hardly ever uses the greenhosue and now...?
Not dissing her or anything. She is a brilliant teacher.

I think we are learning more than some people who are not bending their leaning structure. This is because of our involvement in the community.

I still think we are learning much better than people in normal classes. "Turn to page 24 and work out the problem you're never going to have in real life." But we are learning life skills and stuff that will help us in years to come. Rather than 'How many jelly beans in the jar?'. But then of course, we are also learning the boring stuff, so compared to a normal class, we've got what they have and more!!
